I was compelled to respond to Margaret Gail Segars Rainey’s recent letter, “Stop Biden from Selling our Nation” ( The Eatonton Messenger, May 2, 2024). While entertaining, it’s essential to recognize the sources behind such claims are associated with conservative right-wing media and think tanks known for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories. These unfounded assertions, often targeted at our older adults, lack factual support and must be scrutinized.
My family came here before the American Revolution, so I share the sentiment of pride in being a citizen of the United States, yet I’m deeply troubled by the current state of our country. The failure to expand Medicaid and utilize federal social service programs adequately, especially for older adults and the poor, is a critical issue. As evidenced by Putnam General Hospital’s reliance on Medicaid, this neglect affects countless Americans.
Moreover, the challenges with mail delivery, erroneously blamed on President Biden, are a result of actions initiated under the previous administration. The appointment in May of 2020 of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Trump supporter, led to directives that have exacerbated the situation, impacting citizens nationwide, including Georgians awaiting their mail for months.
I also thank The Eatonton Messenger for the coverage on this situation in the same edition. It’s crucial to discern facts from political spin, especially regarding voting decisions. It’s imperative to address the substantive issues facing our nation with clarity and accuracy.
