Putnam volleyball starts with mixed results

Putnam County’s volleyball team has seen mixed results at the start of its 2024 season. The Lady War Eagles entered the week with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-0 mark in area play. They’ve faced some tough competition and have four more matches this week.

Putnam County has faced stout opponents, including Elbert County, Davidson Fine Arts, Westminster (Augusta), Morgan County, and Aquinas, each of which defeated the Lady War Eagles this year.

On the other hand, the Lady War Eagles have beaten Greene County, Westside (Augusta), and Southwest (Macon).

Last Thursday, Putnam County defeated Greene County 2-1 in a contested battle. The Lady War Eagles won the first set, lost the second, and returned to win a close third set to secure the win.

Putnam County volleyball coach Rakeena Griffin hopes to get her team back to the playoffs this year.

The Lady War Eagles lost five seniors to graduation in May but returned key contributors such as Trina Tracey, Armanii Bailey, and others. Younger players like Brysen Pearson have also stepped up.

These three players and more power Putnam County’s returning core this season. The Lady War Eagles have four seniors: Bailey, Regina Espin, Skylar Reagin, and Kristina Xiong. These veteran players were part of a 10-13 team that missed a trip to the Class 2A playoffs last year.

This week, Putnam County will be on the road. The Lady War Eagles faced ACE Charter and Dublin in Macon past print time on Tuesday. They’re set to play Rabun County and Franklin County in Tiger this Thursday. Next Tuesday, they will host Central (Macon) and Lamar County.
