Carey Wendel Shupe

Carey Wendel Shupe, 88, of Eatonton, Georgia, died May 22, 2026, in Eatonton, GA.

Born April 12, 1938, in Eatonton, Georgia, to Willie Ben Shupe and Clairce Thompson Shupe, Carey grew up on his family’s dairy farm and carried a lifetime of hard work and community values.

He graduated from Putnam High School in 1957. He answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force, where he served six years on active duty and then spent 22 years in the Air National Guard, retiring as a Master Sergeant.

After active duty Carey married Doris Maddox, on December 22, 1961. After his active-duty service, he worked at Warner Robins AFB for a few years before moving to Atlanta to work for IBM, where he retired after 31 years. He and Doris later moved back to Eatonton to enjoy family and community life.

Carey is survived by his wife of 64 years Doris Maddox Shupe, son Carey Wendel Shupe, Jr. (Cindy), daughter Deborah Ann Shupe (Ruth Taylor), Grandchildren Kiersten Shupe Wilder (and husband Luke) and Alexis Shupe, Greatgrandchildren Asher Shupe and William Wilder, Siblings Glendon (Martha Ann) Shupe, Shirley (Dozy) Hoy; LaRue Shupe, Charles (Ann) Shupe and brother in law Jerry Hoy(predeceased) Carey’s life was defined by faith, family, and service. He found joy in simple blessings— time with loved ones, a well-tended garden, and moments of quiet prayer. He was proud to serve his country, cherish his church, and support the Eatonton community through the Elks Club and local charities.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., May 30, 2026 at Philadelphia Methodist Church. The family received friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Philadelphia Methodist Church , Elks Club, Peaceful Purpose Hospice, or another preferred charity.
