George Hassel Weems, Junior of Eatonton passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the age of 86.
After several months of declining health, he died peacefully at home, on the same property where he was born, with his beloved wife B.J. Weems, and family attending him.
He was born in the Rockville area of Putnam County on January 9, 1937, to George Hassel Weems, Senior, and Mable Beatrice Humphries Weems Lancaster, and was the eldest of three siblings. He graduated from Putnam County High School in the class of 1955 and later attended Mercer University and Georgia State University. His mother arranged the first date between George and B.J., an invitation to ride to a basketball tournament together with them, and that connection grew to their marriage on July 18, 1958.
George joined Georgia Army National Guard at age 17 and went on to become the Commander of Company C, 1st Battalion of the 108th Armor Regiment, after having received his commission through the first graduating class of the State Officer Candidate School in 1962. He retired from the Georgia National Guard after 27 years of honorable service.
George grew up attending Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, participating in youth and adult activities there.
He committed his life to and served many years teaching and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He was a graduate of Rhema Bible Training Center, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in 1980 and went on with B.J. to do missionary work as an ordained minister via Victory Bible Institute of Tulsa, Oklahoma, through their evangelical travels in Russia, Romania, and Germany. He and B.J. are members of Liberty Chapel in Eatonton.
Outside his work of serving God, Country, and State was George’s time with the Georgia Highway Department, J.P. Stevens Textiles, Gulf Life Insurance, and The Nestlé Company, and then retiring from a career with Horton Homes. As dedicated to work and service as he was, George also had a lifelong affinity for dogs and horses. He was a member of the Remus Riders trail riding group.
The greatest joy in George’s life was his family – his wife B.J. of 65 years, their four children, and their four grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents and sister Theresa Ann Weems. He is survived by brother James Patrick “Pat” Weems (Cheryl), wife B. J. Weems; children Kelly Lynn Weems, Julie Ann Weems Harper (Chris), George Hassel Weems, III (Bené), and Lee Weems (Jessica); grandchildren Tyler Weems Pennington, Anna Grace Weems, Kaitlyn Weems, Aiden George Weems; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at 3:00 PM and followed by Memorial Services with military funeral honors at 4:00 PM, both at Liberty Chapel located at 269 Milledgeville Road in Eatonton by Pastor Ron Drawdy.
Honorary Pallbearers included Bill Sowell, Joe Nicholls, Ronald Linch, Jay Weems, David Beasley, Bill Edwards, Dudley Horton, Ernest M. Epps, Jamie Gibbs, Stinson Batchelor, Tom Leach, Chip Walker, Larry Manley, Miguel Matos, and Roger Pierce, with a private family burial service to be held at a later date.
