Randy Prater

Randy Prater, 74, of Walnut Grove, GA passed away August 7, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Scarlett Cowan Prater, son Greg Prater (Sherry), four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Randy is retired from Dekalb County GA Water Department. He also served as the Water Superintendent of the City of Conyers Water for five years. Randy was also instrumental in several big water projects, including a water reclamation project in Gwinnett County, the City of Atlanta Hemphill Water Plant, the construction of Centennial Park in Atlanta, and bringing water service to Putnam County rural areas.

Never one to be idle, he even took up driving a tour bus for Georgia Driving Academy after he retired.

Randy grew up in Conyers, Rockdale County. He lived for 25 years in Eatonton, GA, until his health began to decline and he moved to Walton County to be closer to his family.

Faith and family were always important to Randy. He was on the praise team for the Cowboy Church in Milledgeville. When the church disbanded, the team continued to serve the Lord playing for nursing homes until COVID hit. He attended Sparta Baptist Church for several years prior to his death, as often as his health permitted.

He was the Past Master of Mansfield Lodge #489 and was a Mason since 1979. He was an avid Shriner, belonging to Yaarab Shrine and later Al Sihah Shrine. Randy served as Chief Aide and Transportation Director for Al Sihah Shrine.

Transporting children to Shriner’s Hospitals was a special passion for Randy.

Services were held at Scot Ward Funeral Home, 699 American Legion Road, Conyers, GA 30012, on Saturday, August 12, 2023.

Visitation with family was from 11 am-1 pm.
