Benjamin-Smith: Just one step away

I am constantly wondering about things, but over the past few weeks, I've had to put the brakes on and really think. I believe my brain isn't used to thinking that much.

First, the annual Mothers Against Crime banquet was held, with approximately 100 people helping us celebrate 34 years of service. Truthfully, it hasn't felt like 34 years of work — it's been 34 years of pleasure. There is a special warmth that comes from gathering together and communicating with one another. Think about how much we learn from other people. Try it sometime.

We held our banquet at First Methodist Church in its beautiful Great Hall. Woody Farley, with help from several other members, handled the table decorations. That's his specialty, and we are proud of both his talent and his dedication. Our members work hard, and we are so thankful for each of them.

Please keep a couple of our members in your prayers. We are all looking forward to welcoming them back. Brenda Bonner has returned, and we will be very, very happy to see Connie Christopher and Judy Shaw back with us soon as well.

Oh, I can't brag enough about this year's Dairy Festival. Every year is wonderful, but this one may have topped them all. The Pilot Club always goes above and beyond, and I can't praise them enough.

I believe there were more people attending this year than ever before. There was food, rides for the children, and vendors everywhere. I couldn't stop bragging about Eatonton and Putnam County. One day I'll probably be handed another promoter's hat because this one is getting worn out.

I did have a quiet moment during the festival when I simply stopped and looked around. I was on the courthouse square, sharing one of my Uncle Remus stories. Did you notice I said "my" stories? I love them so much that they feel like they belong to me.

As I read aloud, the expressions on the faces of those listening brought tears to my eyes. In that moment, I realized how much respect and love I have received from so many people.

I'd better get to my thought for today before I spill more tears onto these pages.

Restoration may be considered a process, but the path to restoration is only one step away — a single decision to leave our own path and walk in step with God's Spirit.

God bless.
