Letter to the Editor: On festivals, tragedy, and Juneteenth

Dear Editor,

Summer is here and we have experienced a calendar of events: the awesome Dairy Festival, the Mothers Against Crime Annual Youth Rally at beautiful Oconee Springs Park, the Downtown Get Down concerts, and many other activities. Unfortunately, a tragedy also saddened the entire community, but we pulled together, looked toward heaven, and moved on slowly.

The Juneteenth Parade and Festival lifted our spirits and I know our fore parents are up there smiling because we have come a long way over time and can celebrate emancipation in unity. I am so blessed to know my history, and be part of today, too. My grandmother used to say, pull the shoulders back, hold that head up high, and don’t bow down, except to pray.

Remember, Mothers Against Crime is sponsoring the annual Gospel Concert at Putnam County Middle School on July 8th at 6 p.m., with tickets just $10, so come on out and help us, please.

Thought for today: We are proud people in a proud city, in a proud county, in a proud state, in a proud country. Proudly celebrate each and every day.

God bless, Georgia Benjamin Smith
