When I glanced at the headline starting with “Stan the Man” in last week’s edition of The Eatonton Messenger (C1, Nov. 7), I immediately thought of one of my favorite baseball players, Stan “The Man” Musial, from back in the middle of last century.
Though the headline threw me a bit of a curveball, it didn’t take long for me to realize that this “Stan the Man” is a real heavy hitter in his own way.
As Stan Tucker steps up to the plate to get these kids to first base in their adventures in reading, he also inspires them to hit the literary ball over the fence! How I wish he’d been around when I was a preschool teacher in the last century.
On the other hand, maybe it’s fortunate and appropriate for him to have his own century being remembered as “Stan the Man.”
