The Gatewood High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team hosted a local kids’ basketball camp.
Head Coach Don Keiser put together the Gatewood Middle School Basketball camp. The camp was hosted from May 24-26. There were 31 campers that attended this year. This camp focused on the development of the fundamentals for younger kids. It is designed to help further the kid’s skill level while offering a fun environment.
During the camp, they worked on offensive drills which included dribbling and shooting drills. Coach Keiser uses the BEEF acronym to teach shooting which stands for balance, eyes, elbows, and follow-through. At the end of the camp, they had a hot shots competition as well as a free throw competition for each grade level. Through the few days, they also mixed in some defensive drills. They worked on how to play one-on-one defense as well as team defense. The coach had the boys split into four teams, The Warriors, The Hornets, The Blue Hawks, and The Tater Tots. Every day the teams played and on Thursday, the final day, they played in a tournament. The Warriors took the cake winning the tournament to bring the camp to a conclusion.
“I was very impressed with how hard all the boys worked and I am already looking forward to next year.” Said Coach Keiser. “Everyone worked hard and had great attitudes!”
This is the second year that Head Coach Keiser and the school have hosted this event. The camp had several current and former Gatewood High School players who helped with the kids. The boys had a great season, and they were able to bring those skills to the camp to help the local kids.
Gatewood Varsity Boys finished the 2021-22 season with a 23-4 overall record with a 12-1 region record. They concluded their season with a 57-47 playoff game loss to Furtah Prep.
Coach Keiser will hold a local kids camp next summer, and he is already looking forward to it.
