The Gatewood girls didn’t fare quite as well as the boys in the Region 4-AA track meet, but five members of the team qualified for the state meet. Two relay teams qualified for the state tournament in as well as three athletes in four events.
Senior Lily Kate McElhenney finished third in the 400-meter dash to qualify for the state meet. Anna Williamson also qualified for the state meet by finishing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and also by finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles. She narrowly missed qualifying for yet another event but placed fifth in the long jump just a quarter inch behind fourth place finisher Kelsey Jaquess of Edmund Burke Academy.
Gatewood’s 4X100 meter relay team of McElhenney, Williamson, London Darden and Presley Moss finished to move on to state.
Eighth-grader Kindall Ward qualified by finishing fourth in the shot put.
“We had many personal best across the board within our team,” Coach Jordan Camp said. “Our region is the most competitive in the state bringing some of the best male and female athletes to our region meet. We competed hard and put up a good fight for state qualifying spots.”
Eighth grader Natalie Sills finished first in her heat but wound up sixth overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.53 Gatewood’s fastest time in that event. She also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash just behind Presley Moss who finished fifth. Moss also finished sixth in the 400-meter dash. Junior Madison Hevesy finished
