Gators finish strong at state meet

The Gatewood boys and girls track and field teams both placed in the top three at the GIAA Class AA state track meet last week.

The boys finished in second place with a score of 83 points, and the girls came in third place with a total of 61 points.

“We had a great state track meet,” coach Jeff Ratliff said. “The boys and girls really stepped up and competed.

Something they have done all year. I am so proud of their efforts and accomplishments.”

Some of the Gators’ top competitors on the boy’s side were Evan Bennett, who finished second in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, as well as finishing in third place in the discus throw.

Bennett also helped anchor the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Blake Callaway came in fourth place in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Callaway also competed on the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams.

Dakota Davis and Noah Bennett finished in second and third places, respectively, in the boy’s pole vault competition.

Landon Moreno came in third place in the triple jump competition. In the boy’s discus, Evan Bennett placed third (125-2) and Blake Daniel in fifth (119-6).

In the high jump, Lake Ferman jumped 5-4 to come in seventh place. In the triple jump, Landon Moreno jumped 41-0 to come in third place and Callaway came in fifth place with a mark of 38-8.25. In the pole vault, Davis jumped 10-6 to come in second place and Noah Bennett jumped 10-0 to come in third place.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Callaway ran a 17.30, and in the 300-meter hurdles, he ran a 42.72, which was good for fourth place. In the 200-meter dash, Evan Bennett ran a 22.66 to come in second place.

The boy’s 4x100 relay team came in third place with a time of 44.87. In the boy’s 4x400 relay, the Gators’ first team came in second place with a time of 3:33.10. In the 4x800 relay, Gatewood ran a 9:18.10 to come in fifth place.

On the girl’s side of the meet, Madison Hevesy won the girls long jump with a 16-5, and she won the triple jump with 34-4.25. Presley Moss came in third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 61.15, and Lanie Nistler came in seventh place with a time of 63.17.

Nistler also finished sixth in the high jump and seventh in the long jump.

Anna Williamson came in fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles. Ellie McMillan came in sixth in the discus throw with a throw of 89-1.

In the 100-meter dash, Natalie Sills ran a 13.74 and came in eighth place. In the 3,200-meter run, Ansleigh Hillin came in eighth place with a time of 14:52.69. In the 200-meter dash, Presley Moss ran a 27.99 and came in sixth place.
