Local golfers shine at PGA Junior Championship Tourney

Reynolds Lake Oconee Great Waters hosted the PGA Junior Championship Tournament Nov. 12-13, where several local golfers acquitted themselves quite well.

Among boys in the 16-18 age group, Alex Holcomb of Sandy Springs finished atop the leader board with a round of 73 on Saturday and 74 on Sunday to reach 147 strokes. Mitchell Strickland of Eatonton was just one back at 148, tied with Andrew Korytoski of Cataula.

Drew Williams of Greensboro finished fifth with rounds of 76 each day, while Rhett Smith of Eatonton finished 10th and Colby Bennett of Greensboro finished in a tie for 11th place.

In the 14-15 age bracket, Bryson Hughes of St.

Johns, Fla., shot a 72 on Saturday and a 73 on Sunday to finish three strokes ahead of secondplace finisher Landon Noble of Sharpsburg at 148. Hughes also finished first overall in the boy’s competition, due in part to posting six birdies.

For boys 11-12 years old, Sam Rogers of Augusta finished with a round of 77 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday to take the top spot. Jack Weeks of Savannah led by two strokes after his round of 75 on Saturday but lost by one stroke after shooting 83 on Sunday. Poli Medrano of Greensboro, who eagled hole No. 2 on Sunday, finished fourth, five-strokes back of the leader.

For the young ladies, Molly Spector of Atlanta finished first among girls 15-18 by shooting a 76 on Saturday and a 77 on Sunday to finish with 153 strokes. Spector also was first overall among the girls over the weekend.

Among the 11-14 age group, Sarah Martin of Evans made rounds of 81 on Saturday and 90 on Sunday to finish first. She had two birdies along the way.

Thanana K. Rome of Thailand finished second just two strokes back.

She had a one-stroke lead after Saturday’s round but shot an 80 on Sunday to fall two strokes back of Spector.

Third was Kallyn Black of Greensboro with a total of 159 strokes, but she led the field with six birdies. Rylee Oyler of Greensboro finished 11th after shooting 184 over two rounds.
