The Putnam County boys track team has qualified seven athletes to compete in the state track meet scheduled for May 12-14 at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus. Athletes heading to state had finish no lower than eighth in the sectionals held at East Laurens last weekend.
Jalon Kilgore topped the field in the long jump with a leap of 22-04 and made the cut by finishing eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.04.
Gerald Kilgore finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 51.19 and seventh in the long jump.
Jermanie Nelson qualified for that state meet by finishing third in 100-meter dash with a time of 11.49, just a fraction of second behind Dontavious Braswell of Washington County who finished first with a time of 11.12.
The team of Nelson, Malik Thornton, Darrell Bland and Alan Hill qualified by finishing fifth in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 43.59.
The team of J. Kilgore, G. Kilgore, Nelson and Hill finished second in the 4X200 meter relay with a time of 1:31.28.
Relay success continued as the Putnam County team of Thornton, Bland, and the two Kilgores finished second in the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:35.85.
Tamarion Peters qualified to compete at state in the shot put competition with a toss of 12-2.75.
Michael Crumbley didn’t quite qualify for state but finished 12th.
The same can be said of Jaybien Eubanks who narrowly missed the cut in the discus competition by finishing ninth.
Malik Thornton finished 12th in the triple jump.
None of the girls on the Putnam county track and field squad were able to qualify for state but a few came close.
The team of Halana Griffin, Kamari Nelson, Alexia Hartry and Shamaya Jones finished 12th in the 4X100 meters with a time of 52.94, less than a second behind a team from Lamar County that finished eighth.
Jones also finished 12th in the long jump with a leap of 14-00.50. Griffin would finish 15th in the triple jump.
The team of E’Riyonna Macon, Vanecia Williams, Madison Mullins and Ti Davis finished ninth in the 4X800 meter relay.
