Putnam County Middle School (PCMS) brought home two season championship trophies on Feb. 4, after competing in the Piedmont Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament hosted by Youth Middle School (YMS) in Loganville.
The PCMS Lady Eagles arrived at YMS seeded No. 2 for the PAC Championship tournament and played their first game on Jan. 28, when they earned a lopsided victory over Carver Middle School. They returned on Jan. 31, for another convincing 49-21 semi-finals win over longtime rival Jasper County that sent them to the Feb. 4, championship game against the top-seeded Loganville Middle School squad.
In a hard-fought, Saturday morning match the Lady Eagles, coached by Shakedra Ellison, prevailed 38-32 to capture the series title over the previously undefeated Loganville girls.
Meanwhile, the Putnam County Middle School boys’ team, led by head coach Alexander Banks, also boasted an undefeated 12-0 record in league play that earned the team a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed.
In the semi-finals on Feb. 1, the PCMS boys defeated Morgan County 55-42, then played immediately after the girls’ championship game last Saturday and completed the sweep over No. 2 Jasper County with a 54-40 championship-winning performance.
