Putnam Cheer on display at Spirit Spectacular

It was a day full of pep and spirit Oct. 8, as PCHS hosted the War Eagle Spirit Spectacular, followed by an emotional Senior Night for the girls as part of the event.

Cheerleaders circled the mat and applauded their seniors in honor of their accomplishments.

Seniors Riley Gill, Shiloh Seamans and LeAja Chambers received a huge outpouring of love and affection from their friends family and especially their cheer coach April Smith.

Smith is in her 26th year coaching the squad and she once again made sure her girls, the Lady Eagles cheerleaders, were well taken care of. The Lady Eagles did not place in the Spirit Spectacular, but Coach Smith chose to have the team take only points, not compete for any trophies that day.

Looking at past competitions, it’s clear the Lady Eagles’ Cheer team is more than capable of taking the trophy after their win Sept. 17, at Walnut Groves’ “Battle at the Grove,” and then, just a couple of weeks later they placed first Oct. 1, over 23 teams at Star Mills.

“The cheer team’s overall score this season has been very consistent. I’m proud of the work they put in,” Coach Smith said. “We now need to push forward to hopefully raise our score in a few areas. We are a very young squad with nine out of 16 girls, freshmen. We graduated 50 percent of our competition team last season. The girls are giving it all they have and that’s all I can ask for.”

The PCHS Cheer team’s season is far from over, too, with regional and state competitions in the works and sectionals taking place the first day of November.

“Young girls, but fun to work with,” Smith continued. “I’m thankful for a community that supports this program and look forward to finishing the season strong.”
