Putnam County softball prepares for new season

The girls of the Putnam County High School softball team endured a couple of tough outings in preseason scrimmage action, but their coach remained upbeat about the upcoming schedule.

Putnam County went to bat for the first time this season on July 10, in a scrimmage at Warner Robins High School. Unfortunately, the Lady Eagles were held scoreless after losing most of their team veterans to graduation in May.

Only two starters from last year return as seniors Lily Frisch and Sam Spisak are both expected to be strong leaders on and off the field in 2023.

“WRHS was a fun game. We got to work on various situations and at the end did a game mixing the two teams. The girls coached each other and enjoyed playing sports with the other team,” Lady Eagles coach Mollie Jones said.

“It was amazing to see softball girls come together and have fun.”

A second scrimmage on July 18 at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School resulted in another loss, but Jones and her team were able to identify several areas where adjustments are needed.

The immediate concern for the coaching staff is working with players to fill key roles with the best personnel available. The good news for the Lady War Eagles, though, is the team will have full JV and varsity rosters to choose from this season.

Putnam County officially opens its season at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 at home against Jasper County’s JV/varsity squads. The next day with the same start time, the Lady War Eagles will host Lamar County’s JV/varsity teams. Then on Aug. 10, they will take their first road trip of the season to Athens Christian, followed by an Aug. 12 date at Lincoln County.
