SOFTBALL: Putnam County enters region playoffs

An intense trio of games to close out September placed the Putnam County High School softball team third in the Region 4-AA standings.

The Lady Eagles played at home Sep. 26, against Jefferson County High School in a game that allowed the Putnam players plenty of opportunity for hitting doubles and singles, but their opponents weren’t so keen on letting them make it home.

Regardless, the Lady Eagles continued to hit and move runners forward until they were able to snag enough runs to finish with a 7-6 victory.

The following day at Washington County High School, Putnam’s Lady Eagles played a doubleheader against a highly skilled Washington County team. The doubleheader represented the first round of region tournament play.

Although Putnam fell 20-10 and 21-12, the PCHS players gave everything they had down to the final inning, playing with character and tenacity throughout the lineup.

For instance, whenever Samantha Spisak came to bat, she hit the ball to the outfield, giving runners time to move up and even score for her team.

Likewise, Jenna McDerment was running hard, both on the bases and in her outfield position. She was a great lead-off hitter and spectators could hear her in the outfield encouraging her teammates throughout the game.

When asked about the Washington County games, McDerment replied, “We did very good offensively, I am proud of us for putting the ball in play. We also didn’t have a bad game defensively, there are just a few things here and there we have to work on. I am also proud of us for never giving up, we worked hard through the whole thing.”

She was right, as the Lady Eagles were not out of the region race, with Oct. 4th bringing another double-header region playoff at home against Laney.
