After losing to Athens Academy 12-1 last Monday, Putnam County baseball bounced back with a dominant performance over Butler in its Region 4-AA opener the following day.
The War Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 21-0 on their home field in Eatonton on Tuesday, Feb. 30.
Putnam County senior Westley Essick and freshman Gates Lanzarone led the team on offense. Lanzarone had a team-high three hits and tied for the lead in runs with three in the win. Essick went 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high three RBIs and three runs scored.
Freshman Wyatt Sims also had a productive night at the plate. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Dakota Jones, Brannan Griffin and Jacob Grimes also had hits.
Hunter Holder got the win on the mound for the War Eagles. He struck out five hitters in the win.
It wasn’t much of a game as Putnam County defeated Butler in dominant fashion. The War Eagles were able to mercy-rule the Bulldogs in just two innings of work this past Tuesday.
Putnam County (2-7) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win over the Bulldogs. Social Circle swept the War Eagles before they lost to Athens Academy last week. The win over the Bulldogs was a confidence boost as they continue their tough schedule.
Earlier this week, Putnam County played a non-region game against Lamar County on Monday before visiting Augusta to face Josey on Tuesday for a two-game league series. The War Eagles close out the week with two non-region games against Jasper County in Monticello on Wednesday and George Walton Academy in Eatonton on Friday.
