BASKETBALL: Gators gear up for region play

The Gatewood boys’ basketball team is heading into this week with only three non-region games left. The Gators (10-3) will begin league play next Tuesday (Jan. 24) against Piedmont Academy.

BASKETBALL: Lady Gators have ‘dog fight’ on their hands

The Gatewood girls’ basketball team may have started a new year but its main goal remains the same. Lady Gators’ head coach Jordan Walters, who recently changed her name after getting married, still wants her players to focus on the bigger picture, which is winning a region title.

BASKETBALL: Lady War Eagles lose close game to Greene

The Putnam County Lady War Eagles basketball team battled their counterparts from Greene County on Jan. 7 but ultimately fell to a 57-53 score. The game was tough, with Lady War Eagles and Lady Tigers players sprinting back and forth as each team struggled to gain control of the ball.

BASKETBALL: War Eagles drop region game, bounce back with two Ws

Putnam County dropped its first region game of the 2022-23 season last Tuesday to Westside (Augusta). However, the No. 6-ranked War Eagles bounced back from the 90-68 loss with wins over Washington County (70-57) and Greene County (86-53) to close out the week.

WRESTLING: Putnam County wins on appeal at home

The Putnam boys’ wrestling team was in action last Saturday, as Putnam County High School hosted an Area 4-AA wrestling tournament in the Eagles Nest, the school’s gym. Area 4-AA includes the host team, plus high schools from Butler, Glenn Hills, Josey, Laney, Washington and Westside (Augusta).

Do you believe in magic? Well, I definitely do after last weekend. As the clock struck midnight to roll the world into a new year, I was on the sideline at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Peach Bowl, and if you watched the game, you know what I’m talking about.

No. 1 Bulldogs win thriller over OSU, advance to national title game

No. 1 Georgia overcame two double-digit deficits to defeat No. 4 Ohio State 42-41 in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The win sends Georgia to play for its second-straight national title on Jan.

FOOTBALL: Gatewood’s Maddox fulfills dreams, commits to Sussex County Community College

Gatewood football player Demarian Maddox will remember this past Christmas for the rest of his life. The Gators’ senior learned on Dec. 25, that he had earned a chance to continue his gridiron career at Sussex County Community College in Newton, NJ.
