Putnam girls’ season ends in Sweet 16 ‘slugfest’

The Putnam County girls’ 2024-25 basketball season ended last Friday in the second round of the state playoffs. For the third time this season, Lamar County defeated the Lady War Eagles, ending their hopes of winning a state championship.

Heading into the 2025 season, the Gatewood Gators are coming off consecutive state championships, and their focus has turned to securing a third-straight state title under head coach Brandon Moss.

Putnam boys begin state title quest

Before the start of the 2024-25 season, Putnam County boys basketball head coach Patrick Marshall and his players established one goal: to win the program’s first state title.The War Eagles’ pursuit of that goal begins this week, and they’re prepared to make a run.

Mixed results for Gators at region tourney

Last Thursday, the Gatewood Gators traveled to Windsor Academy, on the south side of Macon, to take on Brentwood in the opening game of the GIAA Region 2-2A tournament, where they fell 74-56 to the War Eagles.

Lady Gators lose heartbreaker in region tournament

Gators end wrestling season on strong note

Gatewood’s wrestling team performed well at the recent GIAA traditional state championships at Riverwood Preparatory Academy in Gainesville.Four Mat Gators placed at the state championship meet, as Hunter Pierce, Huck McLaulin, Jackson Hewatt, and Tyler Middleton earned spots on the podium.

Milledgeville angler wins Sinclair tourney

Milledgeville’s Sam Montgomery claimed victory on Feb. 8 in the American Fishing Tour (AFT) Division 72 tournament on Lake Sinclair. Montgomery brought a five-bass limit to the scales, weighing in at 18.53 pounds.Montgomery’s catch earned him a first-place trophy and an $813 cash prize.
