Smith: Florida vs. Arizona

Big-league teams are already playing games at training camps in Florida and Arizona. Players essentially report one day and play a game the next. In the old days, the routine was very different.

PCHS basketball players earn postseason honors

Following the 2023-24 season, Putnam County High School’s (PCHS) basketball teams had several players earn All-Region honors. Neither team made the Class AA state playoffs, but the region’s coaches voted on the postseason awards last week.

War Eagles’ season ends in region tournament

Putnam County basketball’s season came to a close on Feb. 13 with a loss to Laney in the region tournament. The Wildcats avenged two losses earlier in the year to Putnam by knocking off the War Eagles 75-70 in the first round.

Gators get in done, win region

The Gatewood Gators took care of business last Friday night in Eatonton, beating the visiting Brentwood War Eagles 89-59 to secure the GIAA Region 2-AA regular season championship.

War Eagles baseball opens season with losses

The Putnam County baseball team began its 2024 season last week and struggled. The War Eagles started the year 0-3 after losses to Athens Academy, Lake Oconee Academy, and Jackson. The War Eagles opened up the year at Class AA’s Athens Academy (ACAD), leaving with a 6-0 loss.

Gatewood baseball ready to repeat

The Gatewood Gators baseball team begins its 2024 season as defending state champions for the first time since the 1992 season. But more importantly, the Gators return plenty of experience.

Putnam girls fall to WaCo, ending bounce-back season

Washington County ended Putnam County’s bounce-back season in the region tournament last Tuesday. The Lady Golden Hawks came out on top during the first round of the Region 4-AA tournament, held at Josey High School in Augusta.
