Putnam coach confident in tennis teams’ growth

Last week, Putnam County’s tennis teams saw their seasons end in the first round of the state playoffs. Each team hosted a playoff match but came up short as the No. 2 seed War Eagles fell 3-0 to No. 3 seed Cook, while No. 4 seed Worth County shut out the top-seeded Lady War Eagles by a 5-0 score.

Smith: The Kentucky Derby

The running of the Kentucky Derby has always gotten my attention – long before I even had the opportunity to experience the “Run for the Roses” live and in living color.I will watch the 149th running of the Derby this Saturday via NBC with mixed emotions. I won’t have to fight the crowds.

Gatewood captures region baseball title

Despite a tough week on the diamond, the Gatewood Gators won their second straight region championship last week. The Gators are 5-0 in Region 2-AA, but four straight non-region losses have shown the Gators they still have room to improve with the playoffs nearing.

Meraz’s hat trick powers Putnam past Cook

Emmanuel Meraz added to his list of accomplishments this season in last Friday’s playoff match against Cook.Meraz scored the game’s only three goals, powering top-seed Putnam County (13-1) to a 3-0 win over Cook (8-11).

Lady War Eagles fall in soccer first round

The Lady War Eagles’ soccer season ended last Thursday in the first round of the playoffs when No. 4 seed Jeff Davis upset top-seed Putnam County 4-1 at Al Reaves Field in Eatonton.Despite the loss, Putnam head coach Brandi Barling appreciated her players’ effort until the final whistle.

War Eagles enter playoffs as No. 3 seed

Putnam County begins its playoff quest on April 25 as the No. 3 seed from Region 4-AA after going 2-1 last week.The War Eagles (13-12, 12-2 Region 4-AA) split games with No. 3-ranked Washington County before blasting Westside-Augusta by a score of 16-0.

Gatewood golf wins region, eyes state

The Gatewood golf team returned to glory as it captured the region championship earlier this month.Five golfers – Gavin Gignilliat, Lathan Hillin, Ames Johnson, Mikey Padula, and Sean Harvey – combined for a winning score of 318. The championship capped off a great regular season for the Gators.

‘Complete game’ powers War Eagles past WaCo

Putnam County upset No. 3 Washington County at home in Eatonton on Monday, led by Gates Lanzarone and Hunter Holder. The War Eagles blanked the Golden Hawks, winning 6-0 to improve to 12-11 overall and 11-1 in region play.
