Outdoors: Boat shows and other indoor activities

I had several interesting experiences this past weekend. First was the Atlanta Boat Show, put on by Discover Boating. Now, I have been to many boat shows in the past, including the Atlanta show; however, this was my first time working at a boat show.

Outdoors: Procrastination and progression

Lately, this column has been the product of procrastination more than planning, forethought, and execution. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the new job and the new location. I’m the sales manager at Clarks Hill Marina now and the amount of work and responsibility is an adjustment.

Outdoors: Holiday season is here

Well, we are in the midst of the holiday season once again! Is it just me or is the time between these holidays getting dramatically shorter? I mean wasn’t everyone just at my house for Thanksgiving? Feels like it. Of course, it also feels like yesterday gas was $0.

Outdoors: Nothing like a live performance

In years gone by, a vital part of the social life of a small town was between church socials and community theatre. In fact, those two items made up a lot of my young life and young married life. We went to a lot of plays and musicals.

Outdoors; Todd Goade, the angler of the year

Since beginning my career as a writer (which I still find funny) I have had the opportunity to get to meet and spend time with a lot of cool people. From guides, manufacturers, TV personalities, etc. I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Outdoors: Oyster etiquette

My outdoor life extends beyond just hunting and fishing. It brings itself full circle with a love of entertaining and cooking. Winter is my favorite time of the year here in Lake Country. The mosquitos (or as my Cajun friends call them maringoins) are mostly gone, and the gnats are dead.

Outdoors: Spoon-fed fishing advice

It’s about that time folks; it’s almost here; spoon time! If by now you don’t know that fishing a spoon is a favorite tactic of mine, you might live under a rock. I don’t think I’ve written more about any other tactic or technique.

Outdoors: Seasons of life

More than 25 years ago I married a cute, little brunette from South Alabama. I’m not sure to this day why she said yes, but it’s definitely the best sales job I ever did. In any case, weddings were a lot different back then, in the days before social media and digital photography.

Outdoors: On being Southern

Does anyone remember the old Motel 6 commercials with Tom Bodett? His famous tagline was, “We’ll leave the light on for ya!” Now he was a Yankee, but a country Yankee, apparently. That’s one of the sayings I remember my grandparents and the older people of my childhood saying often.

Outdoors: Crappie time on the lake

I’ll be honest. When I started writing I didn’t crappie fish much and I truly didn’t have much interest in it. However, since then, I’ve spent a lot of time with guys like Richard Malcom, Maurice Van Hall, Chop Stover, and a few others that really helped me see the light.
