Burning leaf pile becomes a wildfire

Breezy conditions yesterday, combined with low humidity, caused an intentional fire to get out of control quickly. The fire started on a pile of leaves in a residential yard. A resident of Steel Bridge Court was burning leaves in their yard when the fire crept from the leaf pile to a large barn.

Local firefighters learn auto extrication procedures

On Oct. 26-27, the Putnam County Fire Department hosted Crash Victim Extrication 1, a two-day training course delivered by the Georgia Fire Academy. The comprehensive 16-hour course focused on training fire personnel to respond effectively to motor vehicle crashes involving trapped motorists.

New fire station wows Putnam County crowd

Past, present, and future all got their due Monday afternoon at the dedication of Putnam County’s new three-building, $6.5 million complex that now serves as the headquarters and hub for the county’s fire department, ambulance service, and coroner’s office. The ceremonies featured two dedications.

Fire Department has new rescue boats for each lake

Fire rescue boats designed specifically for Lake Sinclair and Lake Oconee have arrived for the Putnam County sides of the lakes to assist in any type of public safety agency’s rescue efforts.

Changes considered in county development, fire protection and zoning

Staff recommendations for changes in Putnam County’s development regulations, fire protection and safety code, and zoning ordinance will likely come under review for possible passage next month. Fire protection and safety make up the bulk of the recommended changes.

Eatonton Fire Chief Eugene Hubert retires

Eatonton Fire Chief Eugene Hubert retires this week after serving 45 years in emergency services for the city of Eatonton. His final day is Aug. 2. “Chief Hubert has been a good chief for the City of Eatonton,” Mayor John Reid said.

Eatonton Fire Department firefighters now have a new weapon up their sleeves for fighting fires. The department recently received a Blitzfire Nozzle, donated by Gro Tec in Eatonton, a subsidiary of Pennington Seed.

James “Jay” Barbee is not a big man. But at just 19 years old, he has taken on a big job as one of Putnam County’s newest firefighters upon graduating a few weeks ago from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) in Forsyth.
