Several War Eagles earn All-Region football honors

The Putnam County football team recently had several players earn All-Region 4-AA honors. The War Eagles had 13 players earn All-Region honors, with five receiving honorable mentions. Putnam County head coach Joel Harvin said he was proud of each player who earned the recognition.

Putnam County football senior Tyson Waller recently competed in the Athens-Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) All-Star game at Clarke Central High School at Billy Henderson Stadium. Waller got the chance to play in the game after being nominated by one of his high school coaches.

In the first round of the playoffs, No. 2 seed Fitzgerald defeated No. 3 seed Putnam County 38-7 last Saturday, eliminating the War Eagles from the Class AA postseason for the third consecutive year.

War Eagles win close contest with Washington County

Putnam County held off a late scare from Washington County, coming out on top 49-47 on Friday. With the win over the Golden Hawks (6-4, 3-4 Region 4-AA), who finished No. 4 entering the state playoffs this week, the War Eagles (6-4, 4-3) secured the No. 3 seed in the region standings.

Red zone woes plague War Eagles in loss to Laney

Putnam County (5-4, 4-2 Region 4-AA) had plenty of chances to score inside the red zone this past Friday against Laney (6-2-1, 5-1), but the War Eagles couldn’t punch it in when it mattered most. The Wildcats also stepped up on defense when needed, leading to a 27-6 victory over Putnam County.

Thomson proved Friday night why it remains No. 1 in Class AA after winning the state title last year. The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0, Region 4-AA) demonstrated their superiority over Putnam County, leaving Al Reaves Field in Eatonton with a 56-6 victory and the top spot in region standings.
