Correction: Property rezoning

An Aug. 4 Eatonton Messenger story stemming from a recent Putnam County Board of Commissioners meeting requires a correction.

The bulk of the story featured the commissioners taking a look at the county fire department’s new ladder truck after their formal meeting, with the latter part dealing with more or less routine items dealt with during the regular meeting.

In this latter part, it was noted the commissioners had agreed to accept Bill and Barbara Vargo’s request to withdraw, without prejudice, their request to rezone 10-plus acres on the Rockville community’s Quesenberry Drive from the restrictive residential zoning of R-1 to a broader agricultural zoning of Ag. (“Without prejudice” means the petitioner is eligible at some future point to reapply under a different plan.) So far, that part of the story is correct.

However, it goes on to state that the Vargos had already re-applied to change the zoning on the Quesenberry Drive property from Ag to a commercial zoning (C-2). That part is incorrect.

The Vargos had indeed requested such a zoning change—but on an entirely different parcel at 860 Harmony Road, some 10-12 miles away from Quesenberry Drive.

The Messenger apologizes to the Vargos and the Quesenberry Drive community for any hardships or confusion this error created.
