Local Putnam County Resident, Allie Scott, recently opened a home business for dog treats called Beggin’ for Bones.
Scott is a Putnam High School graduate and a sophomore at Central Georgia Technical College. She is going to receive a degree for Accounting in Business. After her return home for the summer, however, Scott decided to open her first official business Beggin’ For Bones.
“I have two dogs of my own and I don’t like how unhealthy store bought treats can be. I began making treats for my dogs when it popped into my head that other dogs would like these treats as well,” said Scott. “I decided to get my feet wet into the business world and learn beside my mom, who recently started a travel agency herself.”
Scott accredits success in the business to her mother, Tabitha Scott, and her sister, Brooklyn Scott. Her mother helps her with working to grow the business and clientele while her sister has primarily helped her run booths at event spaces.
“We’ve gotten our business out there through social media and events. Our first event was the Mad Fest in Madison,” said Scott. “We bought a large array of treats for that event.”
At Mad Fest, Scott learned a lot about business and what treats were most popular. From the event experience, she learned more about displaying items, what number of items she should have at events and what type of flavors people wanted.
“Mad Fest was kind of the first trial run of Beggin’ for Bones. It taught me a lot about my business and the customer market,” said Scott. “And I took those lessons into preparing treats for sale and for the Dairy Festival.”
At the Dairy Festival, Scott ran a booth with her sister to sell bagged treats for $5. At the festival, she learned that peanut butter was not as popular of a flavor and that her customers valued the softness that she bakes her treats at.
“I don’t recommend hard treats to pets,” said Scott. “So when I make our treats, I ensure they are softer and can still last for a few days. This ensures that dogs of all ages can have them.”
Beggin’ for Bones sells a variety of peanut butter treats, bacon treats, and wholegrain treats. They also sell pupcakes and have birthday cakes to order. The most popular treat being sold is the Cheddar Bacon treat.
“Our treats are special because they are homemade, healthy and only created with natural ingredients,” said Scott. “My dogs are very picky and still love all the flavors. I believe having something that’s natural and soft caters to the canine palette. Making treats this way is just personal to me and as a fellow dog owner, I recommend Beggin’ for Bones treats to everyone.”
Scott is currently working on treat recipes that will not have wheat to help branch out treat variety for dogs who cannot process wheat. In addition, she is constantly working on the menu for flavors and different offerings of pupcakes or birthday cakes. Scott is also hoping to get an official website for Beggin’ for Bones soon. To check out Beggin’ for Bones, visit their Facebook or Instagram page. To make an order, email Allie Scott at alliescott63@ gmail.com or call 706-818-5922.
“I just want everyone to know what Beggin’ for Bones is and how much we care about your pups and their treats,” said Scott. “All the treats are taste tested by my dogs Miska and Greta along with a few neighborhood dogs so we also have the paw print of approval before marketing the treats.”
