ONE YEAR AGO, AUG. 12, 2021

Last Thursday night at the Putnam Planning and Zoning meeting, Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia proved that adage when a unanimous vote by the Planning board resulted in the first stage passage of two rezoning requests from AG to C-PUD of 66.56 acres and five acres respectively for the purpose of rezoning the property to develop a new, mixed-use development to support the non-profit mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia’s Helms College expansion on Harmony Road.

FIVE YEARS AGO, AUG. 10, 2017

Representatives from Twin Bridges Fire Association presented the recently recommissioned Sparky the Fire Dog to the Putnam County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 4. After receiving repairs from Chuck Foy on his circuit boards along with some body work by John Langley, Sparky was introduced back into the community for service. Twin Bridges Fire Association President Emory Turner, Vice President Lt. Scott Trull and former Commissioner Billy Webster spoke at the meeting and gave a brief history and update on the mascot.

25 YEARS AGO, AUG. 14, 1997

Eatonton’s Piggly Wiggly supermarket will be displaying a new banner within a month under terms of an agreement between the store’s parent company, Bruno’s Inc., and Piggly Wiggly. The two complaints have announced plans to terminate the franchise agreement. As a result of this mutually agreed upon decision, Bruno’s will change the name of all its stores to FoodMax.

50 YEARS AGO, AUG. 10, 1972

Five runoff races involving local candidates developed as voters by the thousands went to the polls here in the Tuesday, Aug. 8, general primary. Jeff A. Maddox, incumbent chairman of the Putnam County Board of Commissioners, was paired with challenger Roy Vining Jr. in a runoff for that hotly contested seat. Incumbent Superintendent of Schools Archie Swymer defeated Mrs. Mary Jo M. Lyle by 270 votes to win re-election. Charles M. Hudson, making a bid for reelection as a representative to the state House of Representatives, will face a Baldwin County opponent, Lamar Wilson, in the Aug. 29 runoff election.

75 YEARS AGO, AUG. 14, 1947

When the biggest murder case among all the Nuremberg war crimes trials opens early in September, Peter W. Walton, native of Eatonton and former Atlanta and Monticello attorney, will be one of the principal prosecutors in the trial of 23 former high-ranking German SS officers. The defendants are charged with more than 1,000,000 murders. Walton is the son of the late Peter W. Walton Sr. and Mrs. Floy Walton of Eatonton.

100 YEARS AGO, AUG. 11, 1922

Arrangements have been completed for the necessary equipment, etc., with the State College of Agriculture to have a moving picture in at least five places in this county beginning Monday, Aug. 21. The show is strictly educational and absolutely free to the people. There will be livestock films, dairy films, poultry films and several others which will be of great interest.
