ONE YEAR AGO, JUNE 24, 2021

Good things come to those who are patient, and for Goodwill of Middle Georgia and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), the 13-year vision of an intrepid journey to build an Agri-Tourism campus at Lake Oconee came to fruition in December 2020 when Goodwill received a $10 million contribution from acclaimed writer and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. It was one of the 384 organizations selected by Scott after months of due diligence. The donation will be used in part to support the organization’s educational mission, Helms College.

FIVE YEARS AGO, JUNE 22, 2017

Students in the Putnam County High School Jazz Band learn more than just how to play an instrument. “I’ve learned leadership skills and it is something I would like to pursue in the future as a hobby,” said Hunter Franks, a rising junior who plays the trumpet. “It’s cool to see how different people and instruments harmonize as a team; everything comes together to make a bigger picture.”

25 YEARS AGO, JUNE 26, 1997

Habitat for Humanity of Putnam County will wrap up its first official project Saturday, but all the houses involved are strictly for the birds. The project is a bird house auction and hot dog lunch scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Eatonton Presbyterian Church. “We need $30,000 to build our first house,” said project co-chair Marcia Thompson.

50 YEARS AGO, JUNE 22, 1972

An Eatonton city election to elect a mayor and three councilmen has been called for Aug. 3, 1972. Two persons have already announced their intention to seek the office of mayor. They are Charles M. Hudson, who will be running to succeed himself, and Henry Yarbrough, Eatonton businessman and owner of Yarbrough’s Jewelry.

75 YEARS AGO, JUNE 26, 1947

“Pastures will begin to go down in July, and they will be of poor quality generally,” John A. Smith, county agent, warned this week. He advised dairymen to begin to use temporary grazing. “Establish kudzu and lespedeza,” he suggests, “grazing crops such as Sudan grass and millet, which should have been seeded in May or early June.”

100 YEARS AGO, JUNE 23, 1922

Plans have almost been perfected for having the Hog and Poultry show in Eatonton this fall, and we are making this announcement definitely for the purpose of giving all the citizens of the county an equal chance of beginning work preparing their exhibits. The committee is at work and have already arranged for many of the prizes, which will be both in money and in merchandise prizes donated by business houses of Eatotnton.
