Filming for a major motion picture featuring a star-studded cast wrapped last week after weeks of hard work from cast and crew. On several occasions, roads were blocked by the Eatonton Police Department to film scenes for “Vendetta,” the working title of an upcoming action film starring Bruce Willis, Mike Tyson, Clive Standen, Theo Rossi, Thomas Jane and Maddie Nichols.

Congressman Jody Hice dispelled some reports July 6, that nothing was getting done on Capital Hill, noting the House of Representatives had passed around 200 bills, more than any of the previous four administrations. At a public Q&A sponsored by the Putnam County Republican Party, Hice said the Congressional Review Act, which allows a new congress to review the midnight rules of the previous administration and typically the last six months of the previous administration, was able to disperse 14 of “the tons of regulations the Obama administration piled on through executive orders,” shortly before leaving office.

25 YEARS AGO, JULY 17, 1997

The Putnam County Pony League (13-14) All-Star team won the 1997 GRPA District VI baseball tournament by sweeping Jackson County 5-4 and 17-14. This is the first time in recent history that a Putnam County Pony League team has captured a district championship. Buster Combs, Vince Layson and Caleb Wilard led the team in the two-game sweep of Jackson with five runs batted in.

50 YEARS AGO, JULY 13, 1972

Coach Al Reaves of Putnam County High School has been elected by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association as Coach of the Year in football for Region 3, Class A. Mr. Reaves has been with Putnam County High for eight years coaching football and is also teaching Driver Education courses. He is originally from Cochran and holds a master’s degree in physical education. He was employed at Dodge County High School for three years prior to coming to Eatonton where he taught math and was assistant football coach.

75 YEARS AGO, JULY 17, 1947

Five Ford-Legion baseball teams were scheduled to meet in Eatonton to play in a regional tournament which starts Thursday and lasts through Saturday. The first game was started Thursday at approximately 1 p.m. The teams entered were Hardwick, Camak, Greensboro, Sandersville and Eatonton. These teams were picked from the teams who, for some reason, were ineligible for the regular tournament.
