At the Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, April 20, county officials heard the complaints of seven speakers who were in opposition of the continued use of Fleming and Nelson LLP as the county’s legal counsel. Concerns over county attorney Barry Fleming’s sponsorship of SB 202, a bill that critics say reduces voting rights, were aired before the board during the public comments at the Tuesday night meeting. A 41-year-old Monticello woman was murdered Sunday night by a Putnam County man, authorities say. The man then reportedly went to his Eatonton home, where he shot at Putnam County deputies and then killed himself.
FIVE YEARS AGO, APRIL 27, 2017
A vehicle crash Sunday took the lives of two teens who obviously were loved by many in Morgan County. Michael Christopher Rhodes, 18, and a senior at Morgan County High School; and Brittany Smith, 19, a 2016 alumnae of MCHS and student at University of North Georgia, both of Madison, were killed when the vehicle they were passengers in hydroplaned and crashed into another vehicle. The smell of fuel permeated the air around Eatonton’s Walmart after 422 gallons of gasoline spilled from a pump April 25 at the retail store’s Murphy USA gas station.
25 YEARS AGO, MAY 1, 1997
One Eatonton woman was recovering from a double lung transplant while another awaited the same procedure. Wynn Vickery, recovering in Atlanta following her transplant at Emory Medical Center in February, says she hopes to be home for the Putnam County Dairy Festival in June. Olivia “Libby” davis says “it’s where those with the condition can now look forward to some hope of a life better lived.”
50 YEARS AGO, APRIL 27, 1972
A group of leading Putnam County 4-H’ers will give demonstrations and talent numbers on the 4-H Hour on WAGA-TV, Channel 5, Atlanta at 7:30 a.m. this coming Saturday, May 6. Patti Poole will give a demonstration on dairy foods. Allen Colom and Tommy Boyette will play a drum and guitar number. Veronica Williams will tell why she loves America. Geni Lail tells how to get what you want. Scotty Horne plays “Love Story” on the piano, and Greg Manley talks about fusiform rust fungus.
75 YEARS AGO, MAY 1, 1947
It’s just a rumor that Ol’ Man Mose is dead. He didn’t kick the bucket; he’s still kicking the gong around. If you doubt it, just be sure to see the “Slabtown Minstrels” next Tuesday night at 5 o’clock at the Eatonton Auditorium. Sponsored by the Eatonton Senior Class, the Minstreal will honor Ol’ Man Mose, who’s laid up but not out.
100 YEARS AGO, APRIL 28, 1922
Next Wednesday, May 3, at 4 o’clock, there will be a game of baseball at the School House grounds between the married ladies and single ladies of the city. The belles of yesterday, today and, perhaps, tomorrow, will be in the lineup. The game will be a benefit performance, the proceeds going into the treasury of the Parent-Teachers Association. The prices of admission will be only 25¢ and 15¢.
