With the 2021-22 school year set to begin Aug. 6, mark the Putnam County Charter School System as one in Georgia that will not require – but strongly recommends – face coverings for all students and staff. That’s in the new Return to School Plan, a draft of which was shown at Monday’s Board of Education meeting.

The Butterflies and Blooms in the Briar Patch Habitat could see a permanent home after Eatonton Mayor Walter Rocker Jr. and council members invited its developers to relocate the program to protected city property. With plans discussed for the Habitat’s current Aluminum Plant Hill location being earmarked for the site of a convenience store, city officials signed a resolution July 17 authorizing the establishment of a B&BBPH at the Briar Patch Trail Park located at 611 North Jefferson Avenue.
25 YEARS AGO, JULY 24, 1997
Eatonton’s city government will be in its new quarters – the renovated Post Office building at the corner of North Jefferson Avenue and Harris Street – before the end of August, if current plans don’t change. The mid-August move date came out during Monday night’s city council meeting, while the panel was receiving information on the cost of installing a security system in the building.
50 YEARS AGO, JULY 20, 1972
Charles Winslette, a 6’ 1”, 188-pound catcher-first baseman was signed to a University of Georgia baseball grant-in-aid on June 29 by Jim Whatley, head baseball coach at Georgia. Winslette previously attended Putnam County High School where he was a member of state championship teams in baseball and football and was coached by Al Reaves.
75 YEARS AGO, JULY 24, 1947
The segment of Madison Ave. from the Confederate monument north to the Baptist Church is rapidly becoming one of the busiest and most attractive sections of town. For many years this end of town was the center of activities. Then storefronts became abandoned, and the street deserted. Today, with recent renovations, and all storefronts filled, the street has taken on a new air of prosperity.
