Man sitting in road killed by car

A 64-year-old man died last night after being hit by a car, according to Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell.

Larry Russell Wight, of Martin, Georgia, was sitting in the road on the U.S. 441 Hwy. Eatonton Bypass around midnight when a car struck him. Wight succumbed to his injuries while in the ambulance en route to the Macon Medical Center, Cardwell said.

Wight had car trouble and had parked his car on the side of the road about 800 feet away from where he was sitting, the police chief said, noting the location was in the northbound lane between Ingles and Glenwood Springs Road.

“Witnesses said he was sitting in the middle of the road, and one car saw him and swerved around him, and the driver of the car behind that one couldn’t see him and struck him on the right side of its door panel,” Cardwell explained.

Putnam County Coroner Hollis Harrison said due to the “strange situation,” he requested an autopsy, but the GBI Crime Lab medical examiner refused to do it. Harrison ruled the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head and extremities.

No charges are being filed in the incident, Cardwell said. See more details from the investigation in the upcoming edition of The Eatonton Messenger.
