George Jordan Jr.

Bernard’s Family Funeral Care, The Eatonton Chapel, announces the passing of World War II Veteran, George Jordan, Jr. of Putnam County, Georgia.

George Jordan, Jr., known affectionately to family and friends as “Brother,” or “Mr. George,” was born in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, on April 6th, 1924, to Annie Laura Farley and George Jordan, Sr.

The eldest of 15 siblings, George was educated in the Putnam County school system, where he graduated from the Eatonton “Colored” High School.

Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army to serve in World War II from 1943 to 1949. Upon completing six years of military service, which included two tours, George was honorably discharged from Fort Benning, Georgia. He was awarded the EAMEC Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, a unit Citation, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was truly a “soldier’s soldier,” and dedicated his life to helping other veterans. Later in life, on May 29th, 2004, he was honored for his service, being blessed with the opportunity to attend the dedication of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., where his name is inscribed on the wall. Upon his honorable discharge from the army, Mr. George returned home, where he met and married his sweetheart, Maybelle Young. To the lovely couple, a lovely daughter, Charlotte, was born.

While in Eatonton, Mr. George was employed in several positions at the Enterprise Aluminum Plant, where he worked for over 60 years, up until the company closed its doors for good. He was even part of the building’s demolition crew. During and after his time at the plant, Mr. George would use his God-given skills in carpentry, electrical services, plumbing, and other trades to help others, and build his own home.

He excelled at these trades —landscaping and other “gigs” — as well as in administration, serving 36 years on the Putnam County Hospital Authority Board and impacting youth as an Eagle Scout mentor. Having been Eatonton’s first Black Boy Scouts Leader, Mr. George’s support was crucial to the success of young men in need of strong, experienced role models.

Whenever available, Mr. George also devoted his time to building and supporting American Legion Post #583. The project became a source of pride and unadulterated joy for him. Mr. George became a lifetime member of Post #583, where he served as the Sergeant-At-Arms, entertained inquisitive patrons, and provided a historian’s background about the Legion.

Mr. George was also known to be a spiritual man, a dedicated servant of Christ, and a lifetime member of St. John AME Church. There, he served on the Usher Board for many years, and remained a trustee until his health began to fail him. Mr.

George peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday evening, October 1, 2025, with his loving daughter, Charlotte, by his side.

Mr. George was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Laura Farley and George Jordan, Sr., and by eleven brothers, and two sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and dedicated daughter, Charlotte (Decatur, GA); grandson, Brien (Hajar), Doha, Qatar; and sister, Julia (Atlanta). In addition, he leaves behind a host of nieces, greatnieces, nephews, greatnephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Among George’s favorite sayings were: “Be thrifty,” “Read and use your head,” “Don’t waste all of your time on petty stuff and foolishness,” “Don’t throw away your money, invest it,” and “Don’t count the years, make the years count.”

These words continue to guide Mr. George’s family and friends as they navigate a brave new world without their brother present.

A Viewing and Visitation was held on Friday, October 10, 2025, 3-5 p.m. at The Eatonton Chapel, 103 Willie Bailey Street, Eatonton, Georgia 31024.
