FOOTBALL: War Eagles win with third straight shutout

The Putnam County War Eagles are rolling. After losing to Oconee County on Sept. 2, they’re now riding a four-game winning streak and haven’t been scored on in the last three. Putnam County (5-1, 2-0 Region 4-2A) closed out the month on Sept.

VOLLEYBALL: Mixed results for Lady Eagles

Putnam County High School (PCHS) volleyball had a mix of triumph and trouble last week, leaving the team ranked fifth in the Area 4-AA region standings. The Lady Eagles faced both Laney High and Richmond County Technical Career Magnet (RCTCM) Sept. 27, in Augusta.

Smart: ‘We did not play well’

Top-ranked Georgia got a taste of reality Saturday on Faurot Field at Mizzou’s Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs competed in a four-quarter clash with Missouri and came out on top with a 26-22 victory. But the Tigers led Georgia until late in the contest.

FOOTBALL: Lancers remain undefeated with win over Gators

The visiting Lancers from Central Fellowship Christian Academy (CFCA) spoiled Gatewood Schools’ homecoming game on Sep. 29, posting a 31-21 win over the Gators. The game was moved ahead one day in case of inclement weather associated with Hurricane Ian over the weekend.

Gators ‘Swamp Stomp’ Eatonton

More than 120 runners started Gatewood Schools’ 14th annual 5K for Kaye Swamp Stomp on Sep. 18, with Gatewood 8th grader Cale Ferguson the first to reach the finish line precisely 22 minutes, 5.3 seconds later.

FOOTBALL: Bland pushes Putnam past Josey

Putnam County’s DJ Bland had a big night in a 40-0 win over Josey High on Friday at Al Reaves Field. The senior wide receiver hauled in a team-high four receptions for 96 yards and two TDs. Bland also led the War Eagles in rushing yards, racking up 76 and a score on one attempt.

Vets fish Lake Oconee in charity tournament

WILD Jaeger Veteran Adventures (WJVA) hosted a charity bass tournament on Sept. 24, in conjunction with Georgia Bass Trails at Sugar Creek Marina on Lake Oconee. The weather for the event was nothing short of spectacular, though it did warm up quite a bit into the afternoon.

Georgia defeats Golden Flashes in ugly win

Georgia’s matchup with Kent State didn’t go as planned; however, the No. 1 Bulldogs still defeated the Golden Flashes 39-22 Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Kent State (1-3) played well and kept Georgia (4-0, 1-0 SEC) off balance in all facets of the game.
