Tax assessments show Putnam as residential county

If there is any doubt about the nature of Putnam County’s tax base, this year’s preliminary figures in the county tax assessor’s office should settle it. Putnam has become a residential county. The county’s wealth rests in residential properties. Agriculture? Not so much.

Teen arrested at primary school; mother sought

Eatonton Police Department was called to Putnam County Primary School May 24 regarding an alleged fight around 11 a.m. As it turned out, the dispute was between a 15-year-old boy and his mother, according to a report by Sgt. Harold “Buddy” Bowman and officer Alex Rickey.

Mocha House concludes live local acts series

The final Mocha House fundraiser of the year, the largest of the Coffee House series, was presented late last month by The Plaza Arts Center and The Arts Barn.

OSHM hosts Georgia architecture lecture

As part of Historic Preservation Month, Eatonton’s Old School History Museum (OSHM) hosted a lecture on May 7, “Architecture in Georgia: A Diagnostic Sampler of Type and Style, 1800-1940.

PCHS graduates largest-ever senior class

Putnam County High School (PCHS) celebrated its largest-ever senior class when 202 graduates were named in a ceremony May 26, at Al Reaves Field in Eatonton. PCHS Principal Dr. Andrew Cooper expressed immense pride when discussing the accomplishments of the graduates.
This year’s Dairy Festival will begin at 7:30 a.m. Fun Run, followed by the 8 a.m. start of the Dairy Festival 5K Road Race (map, p. 7). By 9 a.m., arts, crafts, and food vendors will be open all around the courthouse square, and at 10 a.m. the Dairy Festival Parade through downtown Eatonton will begin.

Initially held in 1953, Putnam County’s Dairy Festival continues today in recognition of the local dairy industry, as well as honoring contributions by dairy farmers and their families to the county.

Door-to-door solicitors arrested at sheriff’s house

Two door-to-door salesmen picked the wrong house Saturday and ended up in the Putnam County jail. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills was outside working in his yard Saturday afternoon when two men in a pickup truck pulled into his driveway.
