The Putnam County Board of Education convened on May 11 to discuss mental health resources, staffing updates, and budget planning.
After Board Chair Dr. Steven Weiner called the meeting to order, Putnam County Schools Superintendent Derick Austin reviewed minutes from the April 13 work session and April 20 regular session.
During the special programs update, Tiera Bowen followed up on district determinations and a mental health survey, and Rev. Simone Jones recommended that the district provide additional information and educational resources for parents seeking mental health assistance for students.
Austin also discussed Family Connections, a community-based agency seeking a coordinator. He said the BOE would serve as the fiscal agent, while a Family Connections board, composed of community members, would appoint the coordinator.
Dr. Fernando Aker updated the board on human resources, reporting that six vacancies remain, but the hiring season has been successful so far. He said 26 individuals have been hired so far.
The board also discussed amendments to the June meeting calendar, with Austin recommending reducing the schedule to just one meeting in June.
Board members also reviewed the Georgia School Boards Association board recognition process and timeline, including a rubric outlining exemplary board expectations and updated standards.
Austin later provided updates on the fiscal year 2027 budget and graduation ceremonies. Board members also discussed an upcoming conference scheduled for June 8-10, at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah.
Officials said recent concerns about the virus and a crash on the Canva platform did not affect county operations. The board also confirmed the FY27 budget accounted for increasing vehicle fuel prices.
The meeting was adjourned following board matters and final discussions.
