War Eagles split games with Hawks, Bulldogs

Putnam County boys’ basketball split games with Washington County and Thomson last week. The No. 6 War Eagles defeated the Golden Hawks 75-72 at home in a thriller on Tuesday’s Senior Night before falling to No. 9 Thomson 78-59 in a top-10 matchup on Saturday.

Gators lose to Lions, conquer Cougars

Gatewood boys basketball dropped its first region game 69-66 last Tuesday at Westminster Christian Academy in Watkinsville but rebounded nicely at home on Friday with a 54-47 victory over Piedmont Academy.

PCMS wins girlsand boys PAC basketball titles

Lady War Eagles post pair of losses

Putnam County High School’s Lady War Eagles took a pair of region losses last week, going down 51-49 at home on Jan. 31, to Washington County, then falling 67-39 on the road on Feb. 4, at Thomson.

GMC football coach to be inducted into Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2023 inductees in January and among the honorees is the late Bert Williams, former GMC athletic director and head coach of the Junior College football team. Williams retired in 2020 after a 23-year career at GMC.

Lady Gators’ frustration continues

The Gatewood girls’ basketball team has had a rough go of it lately. The Lady Gators started region play two weeks ago and dropped consecutive games to Piedmont and Brentwood. They also suffered back-to-back region losses last week, making it four straight.

War Eagles get payback over top-ranked Westside

Putnam County’s duo of Eren Banks and Landon Bonner scored 23 points each on Friday to lead the No. 6 War Eagles in a 66-58 victory over No. 1-ranked Westside (Augusta).

Allen proves to be driving force for Gators

Matt Allen is putting together a stellar freshman campaign for the Gatewood boys’ basketball team. The 5-foot-11, 140-pound guard led the Gators in scoring last week in two key region victories over Piedmont Academy (60-54) and Brentwood Academy (63-52).
